WIC Community, per their request, we are looking to provide DOE feedback on their current investment profile and priorities. This is a great opportunity to share our industry's thoughts on Ideas, Concerns and Suggestions.
NOTE:
Our formal response will be normalized and not attributed to any company.

Schedule: Due 6/12/2020

Grid Reliability, Resilience, and Integration of Conventional & Pumped Storage: Activities focus on establishing a baseline understanding of how capabilities such as flexibility are being used and what their constraints are. Insights from this effort inform additional research into evaluating opportunities and value in future grid scenarios and the necessary services that hydropower and PSH systems are best suited to provide.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and helping steer the investments at our Agency(s).

Jose, Steve and Luciana

This is a key focus area and has multiple challenges. One of the areas that DOE might be able to address is the different services and their value in different RTO/ISO areas. Not all areas are looking at this problem the same and the value to industry will be providing technical data on the benefits against the needs identified by the RTO/ISO. This can also help identify gaps where further DOE work may be needed.

We should be encouraging hydro to work with solar and wind to improve power generation at hydro projects. Additionally, there are potential environmental benefits for the use of floating solar in reservoirs. By providing shade for fish and protection from production, floating solar may be able to improve reservoir for juvenile fish. This would also result in the lowering of reservoir temperatures, decrease evaporation, and increase total project generation.
