There may be a particular vulnerability in the cyber world that is unique to hydro that may not be addressed as thoroughly as it could be due to detection and costs. Specifically, many hydro operators relay on remote controls of water control features. (such as spill gates, trash gates, intake gates, and even the units themselves) Any type of compromise in the sensors on these devices can cause catastrophic consequences. A good example is Taum Salk where a failed instrument caused the dam to overtop. this could have been done via cyber activity.

This topic should also include research into technology and systems to improve existing environmental mitigation infrastructure, such as fish ladders, fish lifts, fishways, counting windows, and trap and haul efforts. One example would be the use of modular technology for fish passage, scanning, and data collection in existing ladders and fishways. By cutting back required civil work, project timelines and costs would be decreased significantly.
